SMAD Day '21
Background
Role: Co-designer alongside Caroline Rodda :)
Target: School of Media Arts & Design students at James Madison University + alumni
Date: Sept. - Oct. 2021
SMAD Day is an annual event held at James Madison University where Media Arts & Design students and alumni connect and delve into the various career paths the major enables. My classmate, Caroline Rodda, and I were selected out of our Visual Communication Design class to produce the branding for the event. It was initially a project every student partook in to practice the principles of design in print, digital, and social media forms. Caroline and I originally created our own separate designs and then came together to complete the final theme. Within a 2 month period, Caroline and I got the pleasure of creating the deliverables for the 2021 SMAD Day event!
Brainstorming
Before combining visuals with my project partner, I made my own concept for SMAD Day. My number one goal was to be eye-catching. I did this by using bright colors coupled with playful graphic elements. During the brainstorming process, I used Mural and Pinterest to curate mood boards and gather my thoughts.
Roughs
These are the deliverables I developed before collaborating with Caroline to make the final look of the project. I used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for the typography and graphics. My original concept revolved around a groovy tone that had an exciting feel. You’ll see in the final deliverables that we incorporated the colors from this concept. I also enhanced the graphics I came up with from this look to create the stickers for the finals.
